Re: The Sentinelese: The Last Semi-Bicameral Society?
Rather, it bring up the fact that the Pirahãs lack temporal organization - and pretty much live in the present (according to Everett, they also have "no numbers, no fixed color terms, no perfect tense, no deep memory, no tradition of art or drawing, and no words for “all,†“each,†“...

Re: The Sentinelese: The Last Semi-Bicameral Society?
Isn't there a tribe in the amazon with no concept of future and past? I think you mean Detroit - but there might be a tribe like that in the Amazon too. But seriously, how would it be possible to test such a thing? It seems to me that the testing alone would alter their perceptions - much lik...

Re: New member - a layman!
Welcome aboard rheiman. We have a number of conferences and lectures at conferences planned for 2010 and 2011 so hopefully we will meet in person at some point. Yes, that would be great. We may have already met in the past. I used to work at the (now defunct) Circuit City in Henderson, NV. This was...

Re: Mirrors
I've had lucid dreams - and one, in particular, that I actually wrote down in detail. Years later, and in unexpected ways, it came to pass. Only later did I realize that the dream foretold what had actually transpired. It's quite involved but I still have my original manuscript from that dream.

Thank you moderator! This could provide rich fodder for science-fiction stories and bizarre, new-age type theories. Do you happen to have a link for a free download of "The Duality of the Mind"?

Re: Ch. 9 - The Oracles and Their Cessation
Perhaps Jaynes and Stove are now sitting in Heaven debating the finer points of "The Origin". Angels waiting on them and all the time in the world. Hopefully this was meant sardonically as Stove was an atheist and the chapter is about the psychological origin of gods and religion! :) It's...

Anyway, Jaynes came up with too many original ideas. Didn't leave enough for the rest of us!!

Impulsive "Decisions"
Considering the link between writing and the advent of consciousness, it would make sense that non-literate societies would lag behind literate societies in their progress toward full consciousness from the bicameral state. When we also take into consideration the fact that the descendants of recent...

Re: Parallel (Dual) Consciousness Episode
That's very interesting. Sounds like this was traumatic for you - and yet I'm certain that many of the rest of us would be willing to pay money for such an experience. Just so we could have a more personal insight into what we usually discuss as detached academics.

Re: Ch. 9 - The Oracles and Their Cessation
I just finished reading this chapter and, as others have pointed out, the criticisms of Jaynes should not be taken too seriously. I think it was, more than anything else, a tribute. As such it seems to have been written more out of emotion (and a lot of admiration) than out of cold, hard, science. T...

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that when I submitted this post. I'd have reread the book by now if not for the fact that it's been on loan for a long time. Please feel free to delete this thread.

Re: Conscious "Gods"?
I'm just going to throw this out there as a crazy idea: Maybe the right hemisphere is conscious and has been all along, but "we" just don't know it? Since the only way we can deduce consciousness is through some sort of language, and the right hemisphere is incapable of language, it might ...

Evidence of suicide?
It would seem to me that, if there is no evidence of (intentional and by sane people) suicide prior to around 3000 BP, this would bolster Jaynes theory. Any thoughts on this?

Re: Degree of Breakdown/Consciousness in Individuals
I think this thread could certainly be expanded upon. What the moderator describes is often referred to as "time preference". Those with a high time preference live in the now. They tend to have lower I.Q.'s and are more prone to criminality. Those with lower time preferences tend to inves...
