Helen Keller: "The Story of My Life" and Viktor Frankl: "Man's Search for Meaning." These old books describes the creation and destruction of introspective thought, respectively.

Yes both good suggestions.

For those who have not read them, Helen Keller's books speak directly to the issue of the importance of language for consciousness.
