I read a book entitled Burning Water, Smoking Mirror which claimed Aztec sacrifices of captives/slaves were not regarded as killing a person, because the Aztecs believed that captives souls or identities were merely part of their captors. I cant recall the author (a woman? read in the 1970s?)
