Join the Julian Jaynes Society

The Julian Jaynes Society is an international, multidisciplinary organization of over 500 professors, scholars, authors, students, and others interested in the work of Julian Jaynes. We have members across the United States and around the world in 31 countries such as Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Anyone that supports the goals of the Society may join. The annual membership fee is $20. The membership fee and other donations to the Julian Jaynes Society go toward such things as the cost of book, article, and newsletter publication, conference promotion, archive and library research, permission to reprint fees, and Member's Area development.

Members receive access to the Member's Area which contains:

  • hard to find articles by Julian Jaynes including his "Four Hypotheses On The Origin of Mind" lecture at the 9th International Wittgenstein Symposium, as well as many others
  • rare interviews with Julian Jaynes
  • essays and articles written by members, including a biography of Julian Jaynes, Philip Ardery's "Ramifications of Julian Jaynes's Theory of Consciousness for Traditional General Semantics," and a discussion of bicameralism on Eastern Island
  • a 90-minute audio lecture on the bicameral mind given by Jaynes at Tufts University in 1982
  • a large, growing collection of articles relevant to Jaynes's bicameral mind theory, consisting of hundreds of pages, including a series of articles on the evidence for bicameralism in ancient China by Michael Carr, as well as many others
  • related E-books such as Kretz's doctoral dissertation, "The Evolution of Self-Awareness: Advances in Neurological Understandings Since Julian Jaynes's Bicameral Mind" as well as books on consciousness, ancient civilizations, the Iliad, child development, hallucinations, hypnosis, neuroscience, the Old Testament, and possession (over 6,000 pages)
  • more than a dozen book reviews of The Origin of Consciousness and other related books
  • rare photographs of Julian Jaynes
  • the latest news on the hunt for Jaynes' unpublished manuscript The Consequences of Consciousness

Members conducting research related to some aspect of the bicameral mind theory are encouraged to submit essays or abstracts for publication on the website. Broad in its scope, the bicameral mind theory has implications for social, cognitive, and clinical psychology; psychiatry; child development; linguistics; literature; religious studies; and ancient history.

We do not sell or in any way share membership information with other companies or organizations. We do not send "spam." E-mail updates are sent to members quarterly. Member information is made available to Julian Jaynes Society members solely for uses directly concerning the business of the Society. Use for any other purpose is strictly prohibited.
