McVeigh is an anthropologist\, mental health counselor\, and scholar of Jaynesian theory. His Ph.D. is from Princeton University\, where he knew Julian Jaynes. He has published numerous books and articles on Jaynes’s theory.

Jaynes proposed that prior to about 1\,200 years ago\, humans lacked introspective consciousness\, with the left cerebral hemisphere during times of stress interpreting thoughts from the right hemisphere as compulsory commands from the gods.
