Happy Bicameral St. Patrick's Day!

This anecdote appeared in a local weekly paper here in Portland, Oregon around this time last year: DEAR MERCURY — In full anticipation of general derision, I confess that I, for one, believe in leprechauns, having met one when I was a young man living in New York City. I was awakened abruptly one...

very interesting

Might I humbly suggest this would have gone well in the "Evidence of Consciousness in Other Animals" thread? As usual with these discussions, we fall into questions of semantics. Is "metacognition" consciousness? It is a case in which modern humans would certainly use consciousne...

I'm not trying to put Alex down

I'm sure he's a very smart bird. I'm just thinking that if Jaynes' theory that consciousness is based on language and therefore only humans can possess it then what are the implications of the new evidence of language ability in nonhumans? Alex may have the capacity to become conscious, who are we t...

Great, but I had hoped for more...

When I saw Dr. Persinger on the list of contributors to this volume I was very glad. After reading Origin I hunted for more on the subject and found Neuropsychological Basis for God Beliefs by Michael Persinger. After this, I was fascinated by his work and the bold questions he asks. I think Neurops...

Thanks for the Alex link. I skimmed the articles and didn't find anything immediately that hints that Alex is conscious in Jaynes' terms. What was of interest was the section speculating on the effects of learning language on Alex's cognitive abilities. (page 205 or 9 Adobe reader pages into Number ...

Evidence of Consciousness in Other Animals

I feel this topic may warrant it's own section but we'll see if anyone else has a comment. I have been reading a lot about chimpanzee behavior and the results of teaching apes sign language. I realize there is a lot of debate about whether chimps are actually communicating or just learning complex s...

Various

On Lucidity For those who may not know, this phenomenon is becoming very big in popular culture there are many books and websites about training yourself to "be lucid". Many fascinating discussions out there on sites dedicated to this. And there is a great film called Waking Life. I have ...

Cows, Pigs, Wars and Witches by Marvin Harris

While this does not directly address your question it may shed some light on it. Marvin Harris' book Cows, Pigs, Wars and Witches examines cultural and religious taboos that at first look seem to be counterproductive and may in fact be against the short term interests of an individual but whi...

Introduction, Interested Layman

Hi, I've been reading here for a while and I have one post in the Schizophrenia section about Multiple Personality Disorder. I read Origin about 10 years ago and have really wanted to discuss it with others who understand it for a long time. I have little technical knowledge to contribute, my educat...

What about Multiple Personality Disorder?

Hi I'm new here so apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere. I am aware that schizophrenia and MPD are not the same thing, however this seemed like the most relevant category to bring it up. I also realize that MPD is a debated phenomenon but I think it has been well documented. I recently rea...
