Re: The metaphor "me"

I just read this interesting https://aeon.co/essays/metaphors-grow-the-mind-and-feed-the-soul-dont-lose-them article on metaphors. The author quotes Emerson with "Language is fossil poetry" but even better he mentions Jaynes: In The Origins of Consciousness and the Breakdown of the Bicamer...

Re: The metaphor "me"

Me is a metaphor in the same sense that nearly all words in a language are metaphors. It just means that an existing word is used to express a new meaning. Instead of inventing a completely new word, people highjack an old word. Jaynes gives the word "be" as an example, the original meanin...

Recycled article

On https://www.aldaily.com listed under "Articles of Note" there is a link to this article: http://nautil.us/issue/54/the-unspoken/consciousness-began-when-the-gods-stopped-speaking-rp The teaser says, "Now science has caught up with him..." Very exciting. It is is an old article...

Re: Latest News on Westworld and the Bicameral Mind

That is exciting. I had planned to ignore this series as I found the original quite silly. But now it seems I have to change my mind. Nicely done interview, Marcel. I think it is important to freely admit, that Jaynes is ignored by mainstream science without implying some kind of conspiracy. It is j...

Re: A point of clarification - what does Jaynes mean?

But that raises questions about say the original peoples of my country. Aboriginal Australians have been in Australia at least 20,000 years with little contact with other peoples. When I asked Jaynes about the Aboriginals of Australia he did not have a clear answer. But he did think it possible and...

Re: Straightdope on Julian Jaynes

Interesting thread. A pity that I did not check earlier. I would have loved to contribute. The lesson to be learned from the thread, of course, is that many intelligent people, with only a vague idea of what Jaynes is all about, feel confident in claiming that the theory is "not even nonsense&q...

Re: Welcome / Introductions

Welcome! Did Diamond mention Jaynes? I don’t remember. GG&S is a good book, except for the racism. The inhabitants of New Guinea could do everything we do (building cities, flying to the moon) if they only wanted, but we could never do what they do (not getting lost in the jungle). Also, everyth...

Re: Blog Claims JJ is "All Mixed Up"

Thank you, for bringing this to my (our) attention. It is a pity that there seem to be no real arguments in this blog, though. Your reply is very considerate.

As to JJS being called a "cult" — there are worse things.

Re: Vestiges of Bicameralism in the Pirahã

Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention. I read the book and some articles by Everett in the mean time and I am quite impressed. I am not so sure that the book answers questions on the nature (or origin) of consciousness. Surely, the importance of spirits, the lack of spatialization o...

Re: Welcome / Introductions

Actually, I also thought of using Robots for raising children. But I think the problem would remain. We would need to program the Robots in a way to use "Bicamerality vocabular" that we just do not have. I do not think unbiased language is possible. And if it were it might be that some kin...

Re: Welcome / Introductions

Hello ASD, ethical question apart, there is also the technical problem, that we do not know how to raise a bicameral child. In communicating with a child it would be very difficult, to say the least, not to use expressions that reflect our own consciousness and these expressions would be picked up b...

Jaynes in Bowie’s Top 100

In the list of David Bowie’s favorite books we find Jaynes. Good guy. Maybe I should give his new record another chance.

Go for the original. It is not only a presentation of a highly original theory but also great reading. The other books are good and interesting but not as much fun.

Re: "Surely the Chief Must Be Conscious" -Wittgenstein Sympo

The paper I read was very well received. It was a lot of fun. I was a bit surprised though that really no one in the audience (more than 30 people) seemed to have any idea who Jaynes was. So I added some biographical bits (telling them that Jaynes had his 15 minutes of fame). It seemed to me that I ...
