Found a Julian Jaynes citation

Just for the record for the webmaster, Steve Hagen mentioned Julian Jaynes' definition of consciousness in his book 1998 book How the World Can Be the Way It Is: An Inquiry for the New Millennium into Science, Philosophy, and Perception https://books.google.com/books?id=YmbYAAAAMAAJ&focus=search...

Re: Blog Claims JJ is "All Mixed Up"

As an unrelated blogger myself, yes, when I take down a post it is because my opinion had changed due to new info.

Mother Teresa Hearing the Voice of God

"I was sure it was God's voice. The message was clear. I must leave the convent to help the poor by living with them. This was a command, something to be done. Something definite. I knew where I had to be. But I did not know to get there." - Mother Teresa Mother Teresa is a very interestin...

Re: Latest News on Westworld and the Bicameral Mind

I, too, was shocked that Westworld mentioned the bicameral mind. I had passed on the show because too many people were hyping it up. The crazy thing is how Google and Youtube work with the search engines is that the show will surpass much older bicameral discussion..lol

Re: Real world practical implications of Jaynes' theory

Jaynes does mention he did not want to eradicate religion. For many, if not all, religions that survived into the 21st century, they all require the concept of "faith" because we do not hear the voices anymore.

Re: A point of clarification - what does Jaynes mean?

Although our internal non-hallucinated voices do not sound like distinct characters, therein lines a problem with modern consciousnesses- our internal voices could be deceiving us. Although Freud's theories are usually disparaged, id vs superego with ego being a filter is certainly how my mind works...

Modernity Founded Upon Dreams, Hallucinations, Visions, etc

What are the implications of world religions, science, philosophy, etc being founded by people who heard/saw angels/demons/gods/entities/Logos via hallucinations, visions, or dreams? (I refer to the influence of religious prophets, Descartes, Socrates, and John Dee, just to name a few.) How does a b...

Re: Origin of the Gods

Old thread, but I am reading Food of the Gods after watching many videos of Terrence McKenna videos on Youtube last year. I too believe there is a connection between these two theories, at least in theme. It it possible that one is right, both are wrong, or some sort of synthesis, although I, too, a...

Straightdope on Julian Jaynes

The Straight Dope is an old forum dominated by rationalists and humanists. The topic of Julian Jaynes came up.

Feel free to participate if you wish. John Mace, as usual, is the stubborn establishment type.

Jeffrey Stamps and Thomas Forster

I came across two references to Julian Jaynes which I did not see listed or mentioned here (apologies if they have been): Holonomy: A Human Systems Theory (1980) http://books.google.com/books?id=9fs0o1gbpXIC&pg Stamps cites James in a positive light. Thomas Forster Tries to Understand Julian Jay...

Harry Turtledove's "Between the Rivers"

Harry Turtledove's "Between the Rivers" http://www.amazon.com/Between-Rivers-Harry-Turtledove/dp/0812545206 is a fictional look at mankind breaking away from gods due to writing and trading. Although the gods are real in this fantasy novel, the dynamics seem to be inspired by Julian Jaynes...
