Re: Videos

Great! I'm looking forward to seeing it. Please send me a private message with details of where I can download it, or you can contact me here: https://www.julianjaynes.org/contact/ After I see I'll get in touch with them regarding permissions. Another one we're looking for is Julian Jaynes's Decembe...

Re: Videos

This is great, I did not know about this one. I will look into obtaining it and making it available. Finding video of Julian Jaynes has been difficult. Some years ago I tried to get a copy of the McMaster-Bauer Symposium on Consciousness, but at the time I reached a dead end. It was filmed, however,...

Re: Quality of Audio Hallucinations

Based on what I've read about auditory hallucinations, my guess is that they would not reflect an echo, as they are both internally generated and perceived. For reasons that are not understood, because hallucinations are generated in the non-dominant hemisphere, they are perceived as externally gene...

Re: Gary Lachman's History of Consciousness

Responding only to your quote (I'm not familiar with Lachman's book) he actually does accurately represent Jaynes's position on this. When you say "wise guidance would be perceived as the voice of God," I would clarify that the idea of one "God" would be associated with after the...

Forum Cookies/Sessions Issue Fixed

Dear Forum Members, For a period of time the forum was experiencing an issue with users being repeatedly logged out due to a problem with caching cookies/sessions. This issue has now be fixed. However we still always recommend composing long posts in a text editor like Notepad, and then pasting to t...

Re: Bicameral Laughter

It's an interesting question. My initial thought would be yes. For example, we can imagine responding to a linguistic or non-linguistic joke or humorous situation without having an interior mind-space. I think some early, rudimentary forms of humor and laughter could have pre-dated language. For exa...

Re: Recent Experiment Explanations

Your first post is very ambiguous. Do you mean an explanation of the experimental method? There are many books on this.

As for your second post, that issue of the newsletter is currently only available electronically.

Re: Induction

Hi Jim, I would recommend picking up some books on clinical hypnosis -- there you can learn more about the various induction methods. You can also find many hypnotic inductions for free online... they vary widely and you can experiment with the different types and see what you think works best for y...

Re: "Gods came AFTER the rise of civilizations"?

Agreed... the many gods during the bicameral period slowly blended and merged into fewer and fewer more powerful gods as consciousness was learned and the voices were suppressed.

Re: Visual Thinking

Jaynes mentions somewhere that visual thinking, for example, imagining an apple and slowly rotating it, takes place in consciousness, but he believes this ability was first learned through language. In other words, it is through metaphorical language that the mental space for visual thinking to occu...

Very interesting research. In the resulting article that was published, it looks like they focused on the left hemisphere, where the hallucinations are "heard."

Re: Psychic Phenomena as Bicameralism with Strong Intuition

I think that your basic intuitions on this are spot on. Obviously there's a wide range with psychics... everything from basic charlatans who've read a few books on reading people (you can buy them on Amazon) and just view it as a way to make a living, to those that are actually hearing voices and ha...

Re: Degree of Breakdown/Consciousness in Individuals

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that far left/right political positions are necessarily a sign of lesser consciousness development. I think it would have more to do with what their specific beliefs are and how they arrive at their conclusions. One can look at the degree that someone's politic...

Similar to the language of the Pirahã of the Brazilian Amazon, this represents another blow to Chomsky and the genetic basis for universal grammar crowd.
