Re: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

I have also recently been thinking of TMS as a possible treatment for auditory hallucinations, now that their location in the right temporal lobe has been identified in a number of studies.

Re: Battlestar Galactica and Julian Jaynes

That's very interesting... I have heard of the show but was not aware of the bicameral-like character.

Re: The Neurology of the Bicameral Mind and Ecstatic Epileps

This is an interesting subject and is touched on briefly in Reflections on the Dawn of Consciousness (pages 120–126). The idea is that language evolved along with auditory hallucinations, which coming from the right hemisphere had an external quality to them. They also contained an air of authorit...

Re: Jaynes's Art/World Articles?

The publication is long out of print and the articles are hard to find. However, three of Jaynes's Art/World articles, "The Ghost of a Flea: Visions of William Blake," "The Meaning of King Tut," and "Dragons of the Shang Dynasty" are reprinted in Reflections on the Dawn...

Re: Is Julian Jayne's big book available for my little Kindl

The rights to The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind are owned by Houghton Mifflin/Mariner Books. To date they have not released a Kindle version. Hopefully they will in the future but we have no information on this. You might try contacting Mariner Books to encourage the...

Re: Bicameral Dream question

Jaynes believes modern dreams are consciousness operating in sleep. We see elements of waking consciousness in dreams such as an analog 'I' narratizing in a mind-space. In cases where the dreamer simply experiences a visitation from a spirit or god issuing a command while asleep in his own bed, this...

Re: Iliad and Odyssey as evidence

I think the answer to your question is that it is not just somewhat debatable but rather highly unlikely that they were composed by the same person named Homer. Most modern scholars no longer believe that the Iliad and the Odyssey were composed by the same person (Homer) during the same time period....

Yes both good suggestions.

For those who have not read them, Helen Keller's books speak directly to the issue of the importance of language for consciousness.

Re: Is My Wife Left-Handed or Right-Handed?

How do you discover eye dominance? I was under the impression that the only definitive test in mixed-handed people would to be to anesthetize one hemisphere or perhaps via fMRI -- both of which of course are impractical.

Re: Irreversible Dementia and The Bicameral Mind

I don't believe the two are related. However, auditory hallucinations have been documented in the elderly and in patients with Alzheimer's disease. This may be related to an overall cognitive decline resulting in decreased inhibition of the right temporal lobe language areas.

Re: Inner Voice

There are a number of imaging studies on inner speech. If you go to Google scholar and search keywords such as 'inner speech fmri' or 'brain areas implicated in inner speech' you will get quite a few relevant results. Some studies show activation in the left prefrontal cortex. In others, the same sp...

Re: Ch. 5 - Auditory Hallucinations in Nonverbal Quadriplegi

Yes definitely. There is a lot of evidence for this that Jaynes's discusses in The Origin , see for example around p. 143: "The king dead is a living god..." Also the heads found in ancient dwellings at Jericho, etc. (p. 151). Also in Reflections , the example of the dual burials in ancien...

Yes we will do our best. I should also point out that audio recordings of some recent lectures are currently available on the Audio CDs page. The "Consciousness, Language, and the Gods" audio CD contains 3 hours of lectures from workshops and speaker session at the 2008 Toward a Science of...

Are you sure you are not thinking of the syllabus for his course, outlined in his biography in Reflections on the Dawn of Consciousness?

Or maybe the Summary of Evidence?

The only two sources that I am aware of are his biography in Reflections on the Dawn of Consciousness and the actual plays themselves, which are on file at the Archives of the History of American Psychology in Akron, Ohio. For a fee they will make photocopies for you. If someone takes on the project...
