Re: Doctors Discover A Woman With No Cerebellum

It's fascinating that she could even be alive.

Similar to cases where patients are found to have been missing an entire hemisphere, it attests to the power of neuroplasticity, and the ability for the brain to use different areas for functions normally residing elsewhere.

Re: Neuroscientist's Radical Theory of How Networks Become

Thank you for sharing this. Unfortunately Koch tends to define consciousness more along the lines of sensory perception or reactivity to stimuli, rather than introspection. Koch had for a long time worked with Francis Crick, whose book on "consciousness," The Astonishing Hypothesis , was r...

Re: Jaynes - Which Languages Did He Speak/Understand?

My guess would be no on most of these just in terms of the amount of time that would have been involved, and his references to the need for additional more accurate translations (translations that do not attempt to "modernize" the texts or read in a modern psychology to make them more &quo...

Re: Can consciousness breakdown in a society?

I think we have to be very careful about the language we use here, and distinguish between true bicameralism and merely hearing voices or some form of diminished consciousness. Hearing voices in an otherwise normal person is actually relatively easy, through solitary confinement, sensory deprivation...

Re: Is the Neurological Model in Origin Still Valid?

The short answer is yes. While new things are being learned about how the brain processes language all the time, the fundamentals remain the same (I think the article above goes too far). Furthermore, a right-left temporal lobe interaction has been documented in numerous fMRI studies of auditory hal...

The Bicameral Mind in Neil Gaiman's "American Gods"

Neil Gaiman's book American Gods alludes to Julian Jaynes's theory: "... And then there are the gods [in Herodotus]. Some guy is running back to report on the outcome of a battle and he's running and running, and he sees Pan in a glade. And Pan says, 'Tell them to build me a temple here.' So he...

Re: Was Ava J-Conscious in the Movie, "Ex Machina?" (Spoiler

Yes it would seem so. It's interesting to think about the fact that in hindsight, all of her actions were goal-oriented, driven by the sole purpose of gaining freedom. So like you said, she would have to have "observing ego" or an analog I narratizing in a mind-space. By expressing romanti...

Re: Jan/Feb 2017 Smithsonian Magazine Cover Story

It's an interesting point. Judith Weissman discusses this in her Introduction to Of Two Minds: Poets Who Hear Voices, which we've reprinted in Gods, Voices, and the Bicameral Mind.

She had a strong interest in these related areas of language, voice-hearing, ancient history, patriarchy, etc.

Re: Real world practical implications of Jaynes' theory

EEProfessor, I'm glad to hear that Jaynes's theory had such a profound impact on you. On your other point, I'm skeptical of the idea that had Jaynes published his theory in a series of journal articles that it would be enjoying greater mainstream acceptance today. This idea comes up from time to tim...

Re: Dreams and J-Consciousness

I can see you haven't read Jaynes's chapter on dreams in The Julian Jaynes Collection or Robert Atwan's chapter "The Interpretation of Dreams, The Origin of Consciousness, and the Birth of Tragedy" in Gods, Voices, and the Bicameral Mind. : ) There's a difference that takes place historica...

Re: Real world practical implications of Jaynes' theory

Another area where Jaynes's ideas have shaped my thinking has to do with predicting the future. There was no concept of chance in the bicameral era (recall gambling traces it's roots to throwing of lots for divination), and with consciousness we've become obsessed with knowing the future/the will of...
