Re: Oracles and their relation to today's politician's

You're covering a lot of different topics... just to touch on your main idea, I think the comparison of oracles with modern politicians may be a bit of stretch, but I see what you are getting at. Politically, I think we've seen many of these issues before, and in my view the pendulum kind of swings ...

Re: How Did Everyone Hear The Same God?

So for purposes of clarification, that is definitely Jaynes's position. He did not appeal to any supernatural or mystical explanations for the voices.

Thanks for the recommendation... it sounds interesting, I'll check it out!

You might also enjoy Automata (2014), with Antonio Banderas, for some of the Jaynesian implications.

Re: Jeffrey Stamps and Thomas Forster

I was aware of these, however the Stamps book was not searchable when I first saw that it contained a reference to Jaynes (and I don't own a copy), so I didn't know the discussion of Jaynes was this extensive. I'm looking at it on Google Books now and it looks like he provides a fairly extensive ove...

Stanford Prof. Names Jaynes' "Origin" As Most Influential

Stanford Professor T.M. Luhrmann cites Julian Jaynes's book as having been the most influential to her in this Chronicle of Higher Education article: What Book Changed Your Mind?

Jaynes's Book Incorporated by South Korean Artist Lee Bul

Pages from Julian Jaynes's book were incorporated by the South Korean artist Lee Bul in her "Via Negativa II," which explores self awareness. The video posted here shows the exhibit, and the pages of Jaynes's book at 2:15: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_x9_kYXcFg Lee Bul is recognized a...

Re: Welcome / Introductions

Hello Kenneth, This topic has come up before (but may have since been pruned). My thoughts are that the transition from bicamerality to consciousness took place at very different times in different places around the world, so it's unlikely to have been a major contributing factor. We have to remembe...

Re: applications of Jaynes' theory to help voice hearers?

The short answer unfortunately is no. I do have some detailed ideas for a Jaynesian-inspired intervention for auditory hallucinations but currently don't have the funding to develop it. To answer your other questions: 1. Based on everything I've read, I can say that most likely what is happening is ...

Re: Vestiges of Bicameralism in the Pirahã

Yes, I would agree that they do not lack consciousness. However, like nearly all tribes I've read about, they do seem to exhibit many vestiges of bicameralism. What is sorely needed is the study of other even more recently contacted groups by someone with an understanding of/interest in Jaynes's the...

Re: Hallucinatory 'Voices' Shaped by Local Culture

Thank you for sharing this interesting article. I've reposted it to the Julian Jaynes Society Facebook page. Professor Luhrmann has mentioned Jaynes is some of her articles and is interested in the theory. She was invited to speak at the 2013 conference but unfortunately she had a scheduling conflict.
