Re: Conscious kings?
Just to provide some clarification, I don't think decisions were passed unconsciously between persons. I know that was probably not your intention here but I can see it being misread by others. An individual would hear their own right hemisphere-generated directions for day-to-day decisions, attribu...

Re: Wise gods?
The basic idea here is that the right hemisphere is specialized for seeing the "big picture" while the left is specialized to focus on details. Jaynes talks about things like Kohs's block test but there is a great deal of more evidence to support this idea that has emerged since Jaynes's b...

Re: Ch. 3 - Verbal Hallucinations and Preconscious Mentality
I don't think Jaynes was a big fan of Jung, particularly the concept of a collective unconscious.

Re: Are enslaved people less conscious?
It's possible that prolonged hopelessness might lead to a diminished consciousness but I certainly don't think it would be inevitable. An example that contradicts the Nazi prison camp example would be the famous author Victor Frankl ("Man's Search for Meaning") who purposely cultivated an ...

I did like the documentary on The Fall of The Minoans and have it linked on the Self Study Course. I'll have to take a look at the other two!

Re: Ch. 9 - The Oracles and Their Cessation
Hopefully this was meant sardonically as Stove was an atheist and the chapter is about the psychological origin of gods and religion!Perhaps Jaynes and Stove are now sitting in Heaven debating the finer points of "The Origin". Angels waiting on them and all the time in the world.

Re: Impulsive "Decisions"
I'm not an expert but I think impulsivity, violent behavior, etc. is generally associated with problems in the frontal lobes. This is also where a lot of activity associated with conscious thought and inhibition seems to take place. I recall seeing a documentary describing brain scans of murderers s...

Re: Conscious "Gods"?
For a spur of the moment thought it is a very insightful one. You've just stepped into an as yet unresolved (to my mind) philosophical debate that has been simmering (most recently) for at least a couple of decades. Considering how fascinating the idea is, it gets remarkably little attention. To sum...

Re: Evidence of suicide?
Jaynes talks about this on p. 308. I haven't read about this by other authors, however.
It would be interesting to see if someone else has written on the history of suicide or the concept of/occurrence of suicide in ancient civilizations.

Re: Ch. 7 - The Self as Interiorized Social Relations
I agree. I know anthropologists in general are highly sensitive to charges of racism. I've heard that just being seen reading a book by early authors such as Lévy-Bruhl could cause one to be viewed as a racist by other anthropology students (or professors) in the highly politically correct period o...

Re: The Sentinelese: The Last Semi-Bicameral Society?
This is quite interesting, thank you. I will look up Dr. Abbi's research. This is really one of the last chances we'll have to study a group that is perhaps still much earlier in the transition process.
