"Primitive Mentality" by Lucien Levy-Bruhl

Chapter 4 - Omens "The noting of omens was a custom of ancient times, and it was especially practised in the Roman republic, where it was an official institution. Our reading of Latin authors has familarized us with the custom. We should be wrong, however, if we were to admit, without previous...

Bicameral Dreams vs. Conscious Dreams

There seem to be distinct differences between the dreams of those we might call bicameral -- i.e., the ancient Greeks and primitive tribal peoples — and the dreams of modern, conscious individuals. In modern dreams we often see ourselves moving around in various situations, observing scenes, takin...

"Primitive Mentality" by Lucien Levy-Bruhl

Chapter 3 - Dreams In Chapter 3, Levy-Bruhl discusses the prophetic nature of dreams among tribal people. "To the primitive mind, as we know, the seen and the unseen worlds form but one, and there is therefore uninterrupted communication between what we call obvious reality and the mystic powe...

"Primitive Mentality" by Lucien Levy-Bruhl

Quotes from Chapter 2 – Mystic and Invisible Forces continued... Here Levy-Bruhl quotes a missionary that studied primitive tribes. References to "the devil" can be viewed as the missionary's interpretation of the bicameral hallucinated voice: "... ' with these undesirable denizens...

"Primitive Mentality" by Lucien Levy-Bruhl

I'm revisiting "Primitive Mentality" again, in part because I am still hearing the incorrect statement that primitive tribes (or indigenous people, or non-technological, pre-literate oral societies, or whatever you want to call them) show no evidence of bicameralism. Below I've posted some...

"The Greeks and the Irrational" by E.R. Dodds

Chapter 2: From Shame Culture to Guilt Culture In this chapter we see what Jaynes describes in the Afterword to the 1990 edition as the transition from basic emotions to emotions that require consciousness. Even animals such as dogs experience shame, but guilt requires consciousness. Chapter 3: The...

"The Greeks and the Irrational" by E.R. Dodds

Thank you, Erik, for getting the ball rolling... I'll expand this post over the next few weeks and hopefully others will join in as well. Chapter 1: Agamemnon's Apology "... let us ... consider briefly another kind of "psychic intervention" which is no less frequent in Homer, namely, ...

Thanks for posting this. It's interesting to see all of these new studies coming out that support Jaynes's neurological model. I found the last line of that article a little surprising. It's hard for me to believe there are still people that believe voices would come from anywhere other than one's o...

"The Greeks and the Irrational" by E.R. Dodds

In addition to "The Discovery of the Mind" by Bruno Snell, "The Greeks and the Irrational" is another important book for further understanding Jaynes's theory with regard to the ancient Greeks.

I'll be posting some relevant quotes soon in order to encourage discussion of book.

I would recommend seeing your doctor right away. I am not a doctor and not qualified to offer advice on this issue. I would recommend describing your symptoms to your doctor and getting all necessary tests done to rule out more prosaic causes of your symptoms such as a sinus infection, some type of ...

Good to hear you enjoyed the new book. I'm not sure I completely follow you on your last post. There is what Jaynes describes somewhere as Bertrand Russell's error in confusing his perception with his consciousness: While the contents of his consciousness is more likely to be something like "I ...

I completely disagree on all counts. 1. The symptoms that constitute schizophrenia are widely agreed upon. Of course as with many things there are differing viewpoints, areas of disagreement, etc. But if no dissenting opinion whatsoever were the requirement for something to be considered "an ag...

Yes I've heard of CIIS (California Institute of Integral Studies) and I remember there was another psychology school near Stanford University call PGSP (Pacific Graduate School of Psychology). I don't know much about them however (other than they are expensive!). Have you considered CSPP (California...
