Obama and the Politics of Crowds
Obama and the Politics of Crowds The masses greeting the candidate on the trail are a sign of great unease. By FOUAD AJAMI, Wall Street Journal, October 30, 2008 There is something odd -- and dare I say novel -- in American politics about the crowds that have been greeting Barack Obama on his campa...

Re: New Member: Relate JJ & Artificial Intelligence
I know there are people that share your interest in AI and Jaynes's theory but I don't know of any resources right now, or of anyone doing research in this area. Incidently, Jaynes felt that computers could never be conscious.

Re: "Primitive Mentality" by Lucien Lévy-Bruhl
Thank you I will have to look more into the tribes you mention. Yes as noted above Levy-Bruhl's book was published in 1923 and the term "primitive" is no longer considered appropriate as it was at that time.

Re: Consciousness vs. Perception
Yes the equating consciousness with perception (or any number of other things) is a common misconception, not only among lay people but also psychologists and cognitive scientists, who for example present talks at conferences with titles such as "Why Babies Are More Conscious Than We Are" ...

Re: Elephant Painting
Thank you for posting this interesting video. If the elephant were able to draw this "self-portrait" as it is dubbed freely and spontaneously, this would have serious implications for the presence of a "self-concept" in elephants and warrant a major rethinking of consciousness --...

The Ecstasy of Barack
The Ecstasy of Barack Feb. 24, 2008 by Kathleen Parker, Washington Post Writer's Group Much has been made of the religious tenor of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Reports of women weeping and swooning---even of an audience applauding when The One cleared his proboscis (blew his nose for you m...

Yes that is a good point. I can see where the statement was confusing as the second line should have made the distinction that while there were many gods in Gautama Buddha's time and Buddism was influenced by this religious reformer, unlike the others he did not promote a one-god concept. It's inter...

The Sentinelese: The Last Semi-Bicameral Society?
Several very primitive societies such as the Sentinelese and the Jarawa still populate the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean and continue to this day to live in a "Stone Age existence." "It is not certain whether, outside the Andaman Islands, there still exists any commu...

The Golden Compass
I never had a chance to read Pullman's books but last night I went and saw the movie adaptation of The Golden Compass . Like the initial post mentions with regard to the books, in the movie most of the characters have a "daemon." A person's daemon is a form of companion, which in the story...

Jaynes on the meaning of life
I thought you might enjoy this related quote from Jaynes.... In 1988, Life asked Jaynes to contribute a comment on the meaning of life. Sandwiched between the homilies of Armand Hammer and Norman Vincent Peale ("Approach Life the Joy Way!") is Jaynes's Fortean answer: "This question h...

The Minds of the Bible
Your comment does make more sense in light of your non-traditional definition of the term. Certainly people are free to define terms like "god" and "salvation" (and "consciousness") in wildly different ways. My point is just that when one uses a definition that deviates...
