Harry Turtledove's "Between the Rivers" http://www.amazon.com/Between-Rivers-Ha ... 0812545206 is a fictional look at mankind breaking away from gods due to writing and trading. Although the gods are real in this fantasy novel, the dynamics seem to be inspired by Julian Jaynes's bicameral theory.

Characters hear voices: dead grandparents and parents nag their kin and rare messages directly from a deity. Gods become jealous of not being needed anymore due to technology and the individuality of certain humans. Interactions are described between citizens from different cities which worship different gods, and have different levels of individuality/faith.
